Last summer when we started talking about our 30-year wedding anniversary trip, we tossed around a bunch of ideas until we landed on the idea of going to Costa Rica (again!) And not just the two of us this time. For this big anniversary milestone, we both loved the idea of sharing this place that we love so much with the people we love.
So we invited all our kids to join us to celebrate our anniversary in Potrero, Costa Rica.
We had really hoped that all of our four children, their spouses, and our three grandchildren could join us in paradise, but … life. With COVID, school, work, etc., etc., it was not going to be the big family gathering at the beach that I had envisioned. Our two youngest sons, however, jumped at the opportunity to experience Costa Rica and we were so thrilled that they could make the trip. To make the occasion even more memorable, my best friend and her husband also made the trip with us to celebrate and it couldn’t have been more perfect!
The house we rented in Potrero was amazing. EVEN better than the Airbnb listing!
I think everyone was feeling like they wanted to pinch themselves waking up in this little slice of paradise every morning and watching the sunset from the rooftop of this amazing home every evening.
We laughed. And cooked. And swam.
We relaxed on the beach.
We drove ATVs. We sailed on a catamaran. We hiked the rainforest.
We walked across a (scary) swinging bridge and saw beautiful waterfalls.
We floated along a river flanked by a vast network of mangrove forests.
We bathed in hot volcanic mud, rich in minerals and apparently great for your hair. We drank coconut water straight from the coconut and ordered Casado at every restaurant we could.
There were howler monkeys and huge iguanas.
To say that our trip was incredible would be an understatement. Not only the amazing things we did and places we saw but being able to spend a whole week with our family and friends — what a gift. Life changes so quickly and to have everything align so that we could spend an entire week together is priceless.
And, not to get too sappy, but to celebrate being married to the love of my life for 30 years is so hard to believe sometimes. How fast it all goes. How important these days become, as we grow old together.
I’m so grateful to have him as my traveling partner, no matter where we are or what new adventure we’re cooking up.
