We left our campsite at the casino in Kansas on July 1 and headed to our new home for a few days — Kearney Rv Park and Campground. Having never been to Nebraska, we were excited to be adding a new state sticker to our map.
The park itself was pretty basic, but it had everything we needed for a short stay. It was quiet. It had 50-amp service. The sites were level. Plus, it was just a two-mile bike ride away from the city’s biggest attraction, The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument ( also known as The Archway.)
As we are always looking for at least one unique thing to do or see while we are in a new state, we were pretty stoked to find this attraction so close to the RV park. So, what exactly is it? The Archway is a monument that spans over 300 feet above Interstate 80 that looks like a bridge from the outside, but is actually a multi-media historical exhibit that tells the story of the pioneers who trekked across the country on what is now part of Interstate 80.
We had no idea what to expect when we entered the building, but it was pretty evident the minute we walked in that we were about to go back in time.
The self-guided tour includes a personal audio player that takes you through more than 30 life-sized exhibits that share the story of the first settlers as they head west on what is now known as The Lincoln Highway. The exhibits are so well done and really make you feel like you’re walking along with these pioneers, making new discoveries along the way. I was really impressed with the overall quality of the experience and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
