We left the state of Utah on the 12th of August after spending more than a month touring around the state. We visited Salt Lake City, Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Moab. And wow, what a cool experience. Every area we visited was so different and we made some incredible memories. But it was time to leave Utah behind us and move on to our next destination: Colorado.
When we began planning our 2022 road trip, we mapped out our schedule based on two main events: A specific concert we wanted to attend at Red Rocks Amphiteatre and The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
When I learned, way back in early January, that Steve Miller Band was playing at Red Rock on August 22, 2022, I knew we had to plan our journey around that concert.
The backstory: On August 22, 1992, just six weeks after our son Nick was born, Dave and I went to our first concert. And yes, it was Steve Miller Band. Crazy! This year we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary and so, of course, when I found out that SMB was touring and was going to be in Colorado on that day — 30 years later — we had to go. It was kismet. Corny, but we just had to do it. And WOW am I glad we did!
This was the first time Dave had been to the amphitheater, which in itself is a bucket-list destination, and the band sounded incredible. At 79 years old, Steve Miller can rock! We had so much fun and I didn’t even realize how many Steve Miller songs I knew. The Joker. Jet Airliner. Fly Like an Eagle. Abracadabra. Take the Money and Run. And, of course, Space Cowboy. It’s Friday, do yourself a favor and click and listen to all of those songs -even if you didn’t follow them 30 years ago. And if you didn’t, well, you’re welcome. Here’s your introduction. If you were a fan 30 years ago, I dare you not to sing along to all of these hits. So much fun.
Oh, and the opener was amazing, as well: Jimmy Vaughn. An incredible blues rock guitarist, not unlike his more well-known (deceased) brother Stevie Ray. What talent.
We had a blast tailgating before the concert and even met a fellow Canadian. Life, eh? Another adventure for the books.
